Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has commended Ghana’s recent presidential and parliamentary elections, noting that the country has drawn valuable lessons from Nigeria’s electoral experiences.

On Saturday, Ghanaians participated in a significant electoral event to select a new president and parliamentary representatives. Former President John Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emerged victorious in this election.

Yakubu characterized Ghana’s electoral process as “commendable,” emphasizing its contribution to national stability. He highlighted the importance of political party loyalty in Ghana, where voters tend to remain loyal to their parties across elections, fostering a sense of stability among supporters.

He also pointed out that Ghana has adopted effective practices from Nigeria regarding the management of constituency election results. Previously, all results were sent to the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Accra; however, the recent elections saw a faster declaration of presidential results, a method inspired by Nigerian practices.

Yakubu expressed gratitude for the smooth conduct of the elections and reiterated INEC’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s electoral commission in future endeavors.
