Dele Farotimi, a well-known activist and legal practitioner, has been granted bail by the Ekiti State High Court in a high-profile defamation case.

According to reported Dele Farotimi was granted bail of N50 million naira surety in the like sum with someone with landed property. The case was adjourned to 29 January 2025.

Farotimi’s legal troubles began after he was taken to court by Chief Afe Babalola, a 95-year-old Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Babalola accused him of defamation stemming from content in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.

Farotimi’s arrest by Ekiti State police officers triggered widespread criticism, with civil society groups and the Nigeria Bar Association calling for his immediate release. The case has drawn significant attention to issues surrounding freedom of expression in Nigeria.
