Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has criticized the policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly the Tax Reforms Bills, describing them as anti-northern Nigeria.
He argued that these reforms favor only a section of the country and aim to shortchange northern Nigeria.
Speaking passionately during his speech at the Government House on Wednesday, where he received the Christian Community in Bauchi State for the annual Christmas Homage, Governor Mohammed called on the president and his team to listen to the people and change policies when there are complaints. He stressed that no policy should be imposed on the people, as Nigeria does not operate an oligarchy or military rule.
“I call on you to pray for Nigeria and all its leaders, including myself, because Nigeria needs prayers. We are facing difficulties, there is a lot of wahala, and hunger, and we must pray for God to obliterate these challenges. We are not insulting anyone, but we are calling on the presidency and the Federal Government to change their style. Whenever a policy is not popular, they should listen to the people. This is not an oligarchy or military rule; they must listen to the people, and that is what makes a good leader,” he said.
Governor Mohammed pledged loyalty to the presidency but warned that any actions contrary to the people’s interests would lead to anarchy and intransigence. He emphasized the need for cooperation across party lines and tiers of government to provide relief to Nigerians.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing the cries about the tax reform, stating that it is not a good policy for northern Nigeria as it would hinder the ability to pay salaries and build infrastructure. He urged the presidency to listen to the people to avoid anarchy.
Governor Mohammed expressed appreciation to the Christian Community in Bauchi State for their support throughout his political career. He emphasized the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence, regardless of religious differences.
He concluded by addressing calls for him to contest for the presidency, stating that he is content with his achievements but would confront anyone for the sake of his people.
