The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has firmly insisted that the Federal Government withdraw the controversial tax bills currently before the National Assembly. In his New Year message to Nigerians, particularly workers, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized that the withdrawal of these bills is crucial for the welfare of Nigerian workers.

Ajaero also highlighted the need for the government to demonstrate transparency, inclusivity, and honesty in its dealings with the masses. His message, titled “In 2025, hope is in our collective resolve,” extended warm New Year greetings to every worker and citizen across Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians to find inner strength and build a collective resolve to drive the nation out of the underdevelopment that has plagued it for too long. Ajaero stressed that no external power would deliver Nigeria from economic hardship and stagnation; only through collective effort and determination can the nation move forward.

Ajaero called on the government at all levels to ensure that governance translates into real benefits for the people, emphasizing that the welfare of citizens is the primary justification for any government’s existence. He outlined key expectations, including access to food and nutrition, better healthcare, quality housing, education, transportation, and greater security of lives and properties.

He also called for policies that reflect transparency, honesty, and inclusivity, devoid of chicanery, nepotism, and strong-arm tactics. Ajaero emphasized the importance of social dialogue and inclusiveness in nation-building, fostering deeper ownership of government policies to ensure stability and sustainability.

The NLC President reiterated the call for the federal government to withdraw the current tax bills before the National Assembly, advocating for a national dialogue to co-create a new tax law that would enjoy wider acceptance and propel national development.

As Nigeria moves into 2025, Ajaero urged the federal government to prioritize industrial peace, pursue pro-human-progress policies, and respect agreements with trade unions. He condemned the increasing use of violence in engagements with workers and unions, calling for an end to such practices to avoid industrial disharmony.

Ajaero reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to protecting the rights of workers and citizens, urging the government to comply with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and engage in wage reviews to safeguard workers’ welfare. He emphasized that a productive nation requires workers’ incomes to meet their basic needs, fostering greater commitment to their work.

In conclusion, Ajaero called for unity in ensuring a Nigeria where workers’ welfare, decent work environments, and the security of life and property are prioritized. Through collective effort and determination, he believes the nation can transform into one of progress, inclusion, and shared prosperity.
