Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for immediate action to improve Nigeria’s road infrastructure following the tragic accident on February 28, 2025, along the Ilorin-Jebba expressway in Kwara State, which claimed over 60 lives.
Obi emphasized that this devastating incident serves as a harsh reminder of the urgent need to repair existing roads, enhance road safety measures, and regulate the transportation of hazardous materials, rather than embarking on new projects that may never be completed.
He highlighted the alarming rate of road accidents in Nigeria, attributing many of them to poor road conditions. Recalling a similar tragedy in Suleja, where over 100 people perished due to a road-related fire, and his own harrowing experience in Kafanchan, where it took over three and a half hours to navigate deadly roads, Obi reiterated the critical need for infrastructural intervention.
“As we mourn this loss, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Kwara State. May God grant eternal rest to the departed and provide strength to their grieving loved ones,” Obi stated.
He urged Nigerians to embrace collective responsibility in pushing for safer roads, stating that through unwavering commitment, the country can prevent further senseless tragedies and work towards a safer, more secure nation.
“A new Nigeria is POssible!”
