Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, recently paid tribute to the late Dunu Chu Okongwu, a man he regards as one of Nigeria’s finest minds.

Okongwu served the nation as the Minister of National Planning, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources under the leadership of Gen Ibrahim Babangida.

In his statement, Obi highlighted Okongwu’s unwavering devotion and commitment to Nigeria’s progress. He praised Okongwu’s integrity and tireless efforts towards national development, noting that he lived a life of modesty and self-control, qualities that are often lacking in today’s political leadership.

Despite holding prestigious positions, Okongwu owned only two houses—one in Enugu and one in his home village. He was one of the few public servants who resisted the temptations of self-aggrandizement and looting of public funds. As Minister of Finance, he advised on the licensing of new banks but did not use his position for personal gain. Similarly, as Petroleum Minister, he refrained from allocating oil blocks or import licenses to himself.

Obi emphasized that if Okongwu had used his position to enrich himself, he would have been celebrated by dignitaries at his funeral, reflecting a nation that still glorifies criminals. Instead, Okongwu dedicated his knowledge, skills, and passion to serving the nation.

Obi concluded his tribute by expressing hope that current leaders would learn from Okongwu’s exemplary legacy. He prayed for Okongwu’s eternal rest and offered condolences to his family and all who mourn his loss.
