Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, paid tribute to the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, joining the Nwosu family to receive his body at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu on March 22, 2025.

In a heartfelt statement, Obi hailed Prof. Nwosu as a towering figure in Nigeria’s democratic history, describing him as a “true hero of democracy” and a model for the leadership needed at the National Electoral Commission. Obi emphasized that Nwosu’s legacy of integrity and transparency in elections is a benchmark for the nation’s democratic aspirations.

“Prof. Humphrey Nwosu remains an embodiment and shining example of the kind of leadership we need if we truly desire to be a democratic nation,” Obi wrote. He expressed hope that future generations would inherit a country where elections reflect the standards Nwosu set during his tenure.

Obi concluded with a prayer for divine rest for Nwosu and strength for his family and mourners. “May the Almighty God, who has called him home, grant him eternal rest, and grant his family—and all of us who mourn him—the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” he stated.
