The Presidency has addressed criticism surrounding the absence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the country, stating that he is actively monitoring the ongoing killings and security challenges in Nigeria from abroad.

In a statement issued Thursday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said Tinubu remains fully engaged in national governance despite being outside the country.

Opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—Tinubu’s key opponents in the 2023 presidential race—have urged him to return home immediately, arguing that his continued stay overseas is unjustified amid rising insecurity and kidnappings.

Onanuga, however, defended the President’s trip, saying:
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully engaged in Nigeria’s governance even though he is away in Europe. His absence remains temporary and in line with the communicated timeframe of approximately two weeks.”

He added that Tinubu, who traveled from Paris to London over the weekend, is in constant contact with top government officials and has issued directives to security agencies to tackle emerging threats.

“The President’s return to Abuja and resumption of duties at Aso Villa will follow the conclusion of the Easter holiday,” the statement continued. “His commitment to his duties remains unwavering, and the administration continues to function effectively under his leadership.”

Onanuga concluded by appreciating public concern and assuring Nigerians that governance is ongoing without disruption.
