The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has sparked national conversation by likening social media platforms to a “terrorist organisation,” citing their growing influence in spreading misinformation and fueling unrest.
Speaking at the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Sultan called on security agencies to take stronger action against the misuse of digital platforms.
“Social media is one terrorist organisation,” the monarch declared. “Someone can sit in the comfort of their home and create false stories, and people will believe them. Security agencies must treat this threat with the seriousness it deserves.”
The Sultan also addressed the persistent violence in Plateau State and other regions, urging political leaders and security forces to move beyond routine condemnations and implement real solutions.
“As traditional rulers in the North—more than 86 of us—we are united in saying: enough is enough. The killing of innocent people must stop,” he said.
He stressed the need for proactive dialogue and collaboration between traditional institutions and political authorities to address the worsening security situation.
“It’s disheartening when our people are murdered by unknown assailants. We must engage in closed-door discussions, offer guidance to our leaders, and find actionable paths forward,” the Sultan concluded.
