Nigerian highlife music legend, Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at the age of 95. Known for weaving proverbs into his melodies, Ejeagha left a lasting mark on Igbo music and folklore storytelling.

The veteran musician died on Friday night around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emmanuel Ejeagha.

Born on April 4, 1930, Ejeagha began his musical journey in the mid-20th century, shaping the sound and tradition of highlife music across generations. He rose to national prominence in 1972 after being featured as a guest presenter on the Nigerian Television Authority’s Igbo-language program, Akuko N Egwu.

In line with his final wishes, the family buried Ejeagha within 24 hours of his passing. His son, Emmanuel, revealed that his father had requested not to be embalmed and to be laid to rest swiftly. The burial took place at Ejeagha’s country home in Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

“I called a meeting of the kindred and notified Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State. Everyone agreed that his wish must be honored,” Emmanuel said in a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ejeagha is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. The family announced that funeral ceremonies will be held at a later date.
