Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has strongly criticized politicians who publicly commit to serving only one term in office, describing such declarations as signs of mental instability.

Speaking during a rally in Anambra South endorsing his bid for a second term, Soludo dismissed one-term pledges as illogical and contrary to Nigeria’s democratic framework.

“Any politician who says they’ll serve only one term needs psychiatric evaluation,” the governor stated bluntly. “The person must have a mental problem.”

Soludo questioned the precedent and rationale for such promises, adding, “Where has that ever happened? The constitution allows for two terms, not one.”

While he did not name names, Soludo’s comments appeared to be a swipe at Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate. Obi recently signaled willingness to serve only one term if it would help facilitate a North-South power-sharing arrangement.

Defending his position, Obi emphasized integrity over political ambition, saying his commitment to one term reflects his values, not a desire to cling to office.
