Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has stressed the urgent need to end Nigeria’s prolonged security challenges, describing the persistent insurgency as deeply rooted and troubling.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Buratai expressed concern over the continued insecurity plaguing the country.
“It is really unfortunate that security challenges continue to drag for so long. Insurgency has permeated the society,” he said.

Buratai emphasized that addressing Nigeria’s security crisis requires more than military intervention it demands a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach involving the government, communities, and individuals alike. He also highlighted the importance of community resilience, moral support, and improved welfare for security personnel.

Backing the creation of state police, Buratai urged caution to prevent political interference. He emphasized the need for clear operational frameworks and mature governance to ensure its success.

Commenting on Nigeria’s political landscape, the former army chief noted recurring trends in the country’s democratic evolution. He called for dialogue, caution, and national unity amid growing political tensions.

Though he has ventured into politics and joined a political party, Buratai clarified that he currently sees himself as a statesman and businessman, leaving the door open for future roles but with no immediate political ambitions.

Throughout the interview, Buratai underscored the complexity of Nigeria’s security and political challenges, advocating for collective responsibility and sustained efforts to achieve long-lasting peace and stability.
