Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that he will not contest for any political office in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Instead, he says his renewed political involvement is solely to support credible leadership at both state and national levels.

Speaking on Wednesday in Kaduna while receiving defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), El-Rufai revealed that he initially planned to retire from partisan politics after completing his tenure in 2023.

However, he explained that recent national developments have drawn him back into the political space not as a candidate, but as a mentor and advocate for good governance.

“I am not contesting anything. I don’t want to go to the Senate. I am not seeking any position,” El-Rufai declared. “When I finished my tenure as governor, I intended to rest. But given the way things have turned out, I believe we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics.”

Expressing concern over the country’s economic challenges, El-Rufai emphasized his commitment to grooming the next generation of political leaders — particularly young people, women, and reform-minded citizens to take active roles in shaping Nigeria’s future.
