The All Progressives Congress (APC) Media Network has raised concerns over alleged plans to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race, warning that such a move could destabilize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support base in the South-South region and potentially pave the way for a northern presidency.

In a statement issued in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Director-General Iniobong John cautioned that the push to position Jonathan as a contender reportedly being considered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)is a strategic ploy aimed at fracturing Tinubu’s regional backing.

The group urged Jonathan to reject any overtures, emphasizing that his legacy as a global statesman, earned through his peaceful concession in 2015, could be tarnished by a return to partisan politics.

“We believe this would be a disastrous political decision for him,” the statement read. “Not only would he likely be defeated by President Tinubu, but he would also risk losing the international respect he gained after leaving office with dignity.”

The APC Media Network argued that Jonathan’s previous loss as an incumbent president makes it improbable for him to defeat another sitting president, especially one with Tinubu’s entrenched influence and growing popularity.

“President Tinubu’s achievements and reforms are resonating with Nigerians,” John stated. “Any attempt to challenge him in 2027 is bound to fail.”

The group further claimed that those advocating for Jonathan’s candidacy are not genuinely invested in his success but are using him as a political pawn to disrupt Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“They know he cannot win. This is a calculated move to weaken Tinubu’s base, not a serious presidential strategy,” the statement added.

Reaffirming confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, the APC Media Network concluded that the president would be “overwhelmingly re-elected” in 2027, citing his administration’s progress-driven initiatives.
