Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has raised serious concerns over reports that Boko Haram insurgents are now using drones to monitor and launch attacks in parts of Nigeria’s North-East.
Speaking in Mafa on Friday following a recent assault by the insurgents, Zulum described the development as alarming and called for immediate action from the Federal Government.
“The major issue I want to raise here is the use of drones. I was informed that they used drones in Dikwa. This is extremely worrisome,” the governor said.
He urged federal authorities to urgently strengthen Nigeria’s airspace surveillance and defence systems to counter the growing threat. According to him, the proliferation of drones among hostile groups poses a significant danger to national security.
“The increasing use of drones by adversaries is highly dangerous. We must come together and act decisively to tackle this new dimension,” Zulum warned.
The governor also stressed the importance of tightening border control and enhancing aerial defence capabilities, noting that such measures should be implemented without delay.
“We need to improve the protection of our airspace. This is an urgent step that should not be delayed,” he added.
