Prominent Catholic author Deacon Nick Donnelly has called for the immediate arrest of Nigerian Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi following the cleric’s criticism of U.S. Christmas Day airstrikes in Sokoto State targeting insurgents.

Gumi had urged the Nigerian government to halt cooperation with the United States in operations against individuals he described as allegedly committing genocide against Christians.

In response, Donnelly took to X, demanding that Gumi be arrested and prosecuted. He accused the cleric of opposing military action against Islamist insurgents and allegedly referring to those responsible for attacks on Christians as “our warriors.”

Donnelly further argued that Gumi should face trial for crimes against humanity and called on President Bola Tinubu to publicly condemn the cleric, warning that failure to do so could be seen as complicity.
