Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s political coalition-building.
Peter Obi, alongside several political leaders from the South-East, officially declared for the ADC on Wednesday in Enugu State. The leaders said their decision was driven by a shared resolve to “rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Speaking at the event, Obi stressed the need for unity among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general election. He urged political stakeholders to set aside differences and work together under the ADC to chart a new course for the country.
He specifically called on opposition members to rally around the ADC leadership, headed by former Senate President David Mark, in a collective effort to rebuild Nigeria.
Reacting to Obi’s defection, Atiku welcomed the development in a post on his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle, describing it as a significant moment for the nation’s democratic future.
According to Atiku, the alliance promises to strengthen the opposition and lay the foundation for a government capable of delivering peace and prosperity to Nigerians.
“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress,” Atiku wrote.
“As the ADC coalition train departs Enugu, the capital of the South-East, I hope this moment inspires other patriots across the country to join the cause as it heads in their direction.”
