The Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has dismissed reports suggesting he has declared interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Baba-Ahmed clarified that his recent comments were misinterpreted, stressing that he only reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party.

While noting that a presidential bid in 2027 remains a possibility, he emphasized that no formal declaration has been made.

“I never declared to contest the presidency, although it could be a possibility. I certainly did not declare for the presidency,” he said. “I simply reiterated my membership of the Labour Party.”

Baba-Ahmed added that discussions around the 2027 election are premature, explaining that interested aspirants must wait for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release its timetable and for political parties to officially call for expressions of interest.
