Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) narrowly escaped death after gunmen opened fire on opposition members in Edo State.

The attackers, believed to be loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly fired several shots during the incident. Vehicles were damaged, and bullets hit nearby buildings. No deaths were reported. The attack has raised fresh concerns about political violence and the safety of opposition leaders.

Attack During Akpata’s Defection

The shooting happened during the formal defection of Olumide Akpata to the ADC. The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, shared details of the incident on 𝕏. According to him, armed men followed the group from the ADC secretariat to Oyegun’s residence and began shooting.

Cars Damaged, Gate Hit by Bullets

Tanko said the gunmen fired at the gate and destroyed several vehicles. Photos and videos circulating online show broken SUV windscreens, badly damaged vehicles, and Oyegun’s gate marked with bullet holes.

“Democracy Is in Danger”

Tanko described the incident as an attempted assassination and warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat. Security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the attack.
