Chief Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, has publicly warned two leading opposition figures, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former presidential candidate Peter Obi, not to campaign in the South‑West region of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The outspoken Yoruba activist made his remarks in a video that has been widely shared online this weekend. He declared that his supporters in the South‑West will not allow Atiku or Obi to campaign there and insisted that President Bola Tinubu should remain in power beyond his current term including a third term.
Igboho said he wants Tinubu’s leadership to continue after 2027 and suggested that even “extra years” should be sought for him. His message has sparked intense debate across the country as many see it as an attempt to block democratic campaigning and push for an extension of Tinubu’s time in office.
In response, supporters of Peter Obi strongly criticised Igboho’s warnings. A movement backing Obi said Nigeria belongs to all its citizens and that no individual can stop anyone from campaigning or voting anywhere. They also rejected the idea of changing the constitution to allow a third term for a president, calling the suggestion unconstitutional and against democratic values.
Other political voices, including Atiku’s camp, have accused Igboho of acting in the interests of the ruling party by trying to limit opposition activities in the South‑West. This comes as Nigeria prepares for a fiercely contested election next year where President Tinubu is seeking re‑election against a united opposition coalition
