Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai is mourning the loss of his mother, Hajiya Umma El Rufai, while in detention.

Her death was announced on Friday by her grandson, who shared the sad news with the public. The cause of her death has not been made known.

Family members said burial plans are already underway, in line with Islamic customs that require quick burial, often within a day. Reports say she died in Egypt, where she had been receiving treatment.

El Rufai had been with her in Egypt earlier but returned to Nigeria before her passing. He has been detained for over a month before being taken to court. The court has now formally ordered his remand in custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission pending bail hearing. The ICPC also confirmed that his detention is based on court-approved remand orders and ongoing investigation after over a month without charges.

Hajiya Umma El Rufai was known as a calm but strong woman who played a key role in raising her children and guiding her family.

Her son served as governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 and remains a well known figure in Nigerian politics.

Her death comes at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 elections are increasing. Despite this, many people across different groups have sent messages of sympathy.

Friends, leaders, and members of the public have described her as a woman of dignity, humility, and strong values. Though she kept a private life, her impact was widely felt.

In Northern Nigeria, it is common for people to gather and support a grieving family. Visits and prayers are expected in Kaduna and other places linked to the family.

Islamic clerics will lead the funeral prayers as part of the burial rites.

Losing a parent is deeply painful, and this moment is even harder as El Rufai deals with both personal grief and his current situation.

The family is expected to share more details about the burial and memorial soon.

Hajiya Umma El Rufai is survived by her children, grandchildren, and extended family, leaving behind a legacy of strength and values.
