Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party Rabiu Kwankwaso has stepped down from the party.
He made this known in a statement released on Sunday, which he personally signed.
In the statement, Kwankwaso said his decision followed recent changes in the country’s political direction, which he believes now require him to move on a different path.
He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the party’s national leader and to represent it in the 2023 presidential election.
Kwankwaso admitted that leaving the party was not an easy decision, given his long standing role and commitment over time.
Despite this, he said the current political situation in the country has made it necessary for him to align with another political platform.
According to him, the move is aimed at putting him in a better position to contribute meaningfully to efforts to bring about change in the nation.
Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has directed its members across the country to join the African Democratic Congress as political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
The directive was contained in a brief statement issued on Saturday by the movement’s spokesperson Habibu Sale Mohammed.
