Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says leaders of the African Democratic Congress gathered at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Wednesday to protect Nigeria’s democracy.

Top figures in the party, including Atiku, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, were present at the protest.

Atiku shared videos from the scene, describing the demonstration as a peaceful and patriotic effort to stop any move toward dictatorship in the country. He said the group was protesting what they see as bias by the electoral body and stressed that their goal is to defend democratic values.

The protest follows a dispute within the party after the faction led by David Mark accused INEC of unfair treatment. The electoral commission had withdrawn recognition of the group on April 1, citing a Court of Appeal order issued on March 12, 2026.

The court case was filed by former deputy national chairman Nafiu Bala, who alleged that former chairman Ralph Nwosu imposed the current leadership without proper consultation.

Despite this, the Mark-led leadership insists it was properly formed through a process overseen by INEC.
