A Kaduna State High Court has ordered that former governor Nasir El-Rufai remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission while it considers his bail request.
The presiding judge, Darius Khobo, set the first week of June for a ruling after listening to arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
This decision could keep El Rufai out of key political activities ahead of the African Democratic Congress presidential primary. The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed party primaries between April 23 and May 30, a window he may now miss.
El Rufai is standing trial on an amended nine count charge involving alleged fraud, abuse of office and corruption. The anti corruption agency listed him as the only defendant in the case.
During the hearing, lawyers for the ICPC opposed bail, arguing that releasing him could disrupt ongoing investigations and create a risk of witness interference.
Instead of ruling immediately, the court directed that he remain in custody until a decision is reached.
His lawyer, Ubong Akpan, strongly disagreed with the court’s position, arguing that it unfairly assumes El Rufai would interfere with the investigation because of his past role as governor.
Akpan said the legal team will challenge the ruling through proper legal channels and continue to pursue bail.
He also described the case as politically motivated, while urging supporters to stay calm and follow the law.
The case has been adjourned to the first week of June for the bail ruling and continuation of proceedings.
