Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised a strong alarm that Nigeria’s democracy now faces real danger, and the 2027 general elections could lose all fairness if nothing changes fast.

He made the point clear while sharing details of a fresh letter sent straight to the Chief Justice of Nigeria. The letter comes from top lawyers at S E Aruwa SAN and Company and it spells out exactly why time is running out for one major opposition party.

The letter dated April 28, 2026, refers to a key Supreme Court case numbered SC CV 180 2026. In that case Senator David Mark stands against Hon Nafiu Bala Gombe and four others in a fight over who controls the African Democratic Congress known as ADC.

The court heard the full appeal on April 22, 2026, and then held back its final ruling for a later date. Now the lawyers plead with the Chief Justice to step in and make sure the judgment arrives without more delay. They explain that the election body INEC already acted on a lower court decision by stopping recognition of the current ADC leadership. INEC also released a new timetable for all steps leading to the 2027 polls.

Without a quick Supreme Court decision, the ADC risks total exclusion from the coming elections. That would block millions of Nigerians who back the party from having any real voice or choice at the ballot. The lawyers warn that justice delayed in this matter becomes denied. They attach copies of the INEC notice and the updated election schedule to show how serious the situation has become. They stress that the entire future of the ADC and its members across the country now hangs in balance and the party cannot meet the strict deadlines if the ruling takes too long.

Atiku says he refuses to accept that the judiciary which many people still see as the final protector for ordinary citizens would ever join hands with the ruling All Progressives Congress to weaken or wreck the basic rules of democracy. He calls on the courts to stay independent and deliver fairness, so the 2027 vote stays open, honest and free for every political group. This moment tests whether institutions will truly stand for the people or allow power to shut down competition before the race even starts.

The full situation highlights how one delayed court decision could silence a major party and limit choices for voters nationwide. Nigerians from all sides now watch closely hoping the Supreme Court acts soon to keep democracy alive and strong for the battles ahead
