Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has renewed his criticism of President Bola Tinubu, expressing hope that Tinubu will be the last Nigerian president to leave the country embarrassed by controversies surrounding his past and leadership.
Adebayo’s comments come as attention increasingly turns to the 2027 presidential election and renewed scrutiny of controversies that have followed Tinubu for years, including allegations and legal disputes involving narcotics, money laundering and questions surrounding his academic credentials.
Tinubu has faced longstanding controversy over a 1993 US forfeiture case involving funds linked to narcotics investigations. His supporters have consistently disputed attempts to portray the matter as proof that he was a drug trafficker or money launderer.
His academic credentials have also remained a political flashpoint. In June 2026, the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy filed a case at the Federal High Court in Kano seeking Tinubu’s disqualification from the 2027 election, alleging that forged academic and National Youth Service Corps documents were presented to the electoral commission. Those claims remain allegations before the court.
The renewed controversy over Tinubu’s credentials has added another dimension to the political battle ahead of 2027, with opponents arguing that questions surrounding a president’s background can affect Nigeria’s credibility both domestically and internationally.
