President Bola Tinubu returned to Lagos on Tuesday evening after spending about four weeks in Europe, but his arrival was met with a mixed reception as some residents along the route expressed anger over the rising cost of living.
Tinubu’s aircraft landed at the presidential wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 6:22 pm. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu and other senior government officials were at the airport to receive the president.
The convoy then moved through the city under tight security and heavy traffic controls. Videos from the roadside show groups of people standing and sitting along the street at night. They faced the passing vehicles and lights of the motorcade. Crowds shouted ole ole the Yoruba word for thief as the president made his way toward Bourdillon and other parts of the city.
The moment spread quickly on social media. Many tied the chants to the squeeze on daily life. Food transport housing and other basics have grown far more expensive since subsidy removal and foreign exchange changes. Households say the pressure has not eased even as the government argues the reforms will strengthen the economy and draw investment.
Tinubu told reporters after landing that he enjoyed his time abroad. He said he is healthy sound and ready to work. He dismissed talk about his health as political rumour. The presidency said he chose Lagos first to honour the memory of MKO Abiola ahead of Independence Day. He is due to attend a film premiere about Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre on 1 October and hold talks with political leaders while in the state.
The welcome on the streets was mixed. Officials and party figures gathered at the airport. Along the route some residents used the old street cry of ole to voice their frustration after the long absence.
