In a recent press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, announced the Abia State Government’s determined stance to rigorously enforce the prohibition on street trade, especially in Aba—the state’s commercial hub.
Kanu expressed concern over the persisting challenge of street trading, emphasizing its detrimental impact on newly constructed roadways.
Despite numerous attempts to address the issue through discussions with market authorities and other relevant parties, the menace of street trading continues to pose a significant threat, particularly in Aba.
He highlighted the misuse of recently built roads for trading activities, stating that such practices are incompatible with the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure.
Kanu concluded the briefing by affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to completing and opening the Ossah-Okpara Square Road, a crucial one-carriage way, in time for the upcoming holiday season.
The announcement serves as a stern warning that the government will intensify its enforcement efforts to curb street trading by the start of the New Year.
