The Abia State government has issued a directive for the residents of slums located behind the old bicycle repair workshop near Okigwe Park in Umuahia to vacate the premises by Thursday, April 18, 2024. This ultimatum was delivered by the Chairman of the Abia State Harmonized Taskforce and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, during a visit to the area with the task force members.

Details of the Directive:

The government plans to commence the demolition of the slums by Friday of the same week.

The cleared area will be utilized to accommodate the illegal motor parks in the Isigate market vicinity of Umuahia.

Operators of the illegal motor parks have been instructed to relocate to designated areas such as Okigwe Motor Park and Aba Park until a central motor park is provided by the state government.

Commitment to Development:

Prince Nwachukwu emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating touts and slums while creating a conducive environment for businesses to flourish.

The government aims to enhance the infrastructure and overall development of the state capital by enforcing regulations and relocating traders to more suitable locations.

Collaboration for Progress:

Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, a member of the task force steering committee and General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Authority, assured that trading activities around Isigate and adjacent streets will soon be halted to facilitate the government’s development plans.

The administration seeks cooperation from traders and transporters to support the state’s initiatives for the betterment of the region.

Future Plans:

Mayor of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Chief Victor Ikeji, and Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, have inspected the area and expressed intentions to revamp the region for improved safety and livability.

The administration under Alex Otti’s leadership is dedicated to transforming Umuahia and all parts of Abia State into conducive and secure environments for residents.
