The Abia State Government has categorically denied rumors suggesting it has enlisted the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a militia group associated with the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to tackle crime and protect farmers within the state.
In a firm rebuttal issued on Sunday, April 6, 2025, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, dismissed the allegations as “false, malicious, and misleading,” and urged members of the public to disregard the claims completely.
The misinformation—reportedly published by an anonymous blog—falsely claimed that Governor Alex Otti had approved the deployment of ESN operatives to counter herdsmen and assist in securing farmlands. The state government condemned the story, asserting it was crafted to incite unrest and create division among citizens.
“Let it be clear that the Abia State Government, under the leadership of Dr. Alex Otti, has never considered employing non-state actors to address security challenges in any part of the state,” the statement affirmed.
Ekeoma stressed that the Otti administration maintains a strong working relationship with recognized national security agencies. He highlighted the successful creation of Operation Crush, a joint security task force that has achieved notable success in combating criminal activities and enhancing public safety across the state.
Acknowledging the presence of isolated cases of robbery and kidnapping, the government assured residents that comprehensive efforts are underway to eradicate crime entirely.
Furthermore, the administration issued a stern warning to those behind what it described as “dirty political tactics” aimed at spreading fear and disinformation. It pledged that individuals found culpable would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Citizens were encouraged to remain calm and vigilant, while dismissing the unfounded rumors as desperate attempts by enemies of progress to undermine the peace and development of Abia State.
