The Abia State Government has announced sweeping advancements in its transportation and youth empowerment programmes, signaling a new phase in Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s development agenda. Among the top highlights is the decision to double the number of electric buses in the state’s mass transit scheme from 20 to 40, while also enrolling 1,200 youths in a large-scale skill acquisition programme.
These decisions were ratified during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held on Monday at the Government House, Umuahia.
Mass Transit Overhaul
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, confirmed that the state has approved the procurement of 40 electric buses up from the initially planned 20 as well as the expansion of charging stations from 10 to 20 across the state.
“This bold step reaffirms the Otti administration’s vision for a modern, eco-friendly, and efficient transportation system,” Kanu stated.
The first batch of 20 electric buses is set to arrive by November 2025, with 12 deployed in Aba and 8 in Umuahia. The second batch will extend services to the Ohafia–Bende axis to ensure broad accessibility. A prototype of the electric buses is currently being finalized and will be ready for inspection by the end of July.
Complementing this expansion, Abia is also constructing state-of-the-art bus terminals in Aba and Umuahia, alongside junction improvements and the installation of modern bus shelters at key transit points.
“These initiatives will not only enhance mobility but also stimulate local economic activity and create jobs in the transport value chain,” Kanu added.
Youth Empowerment and Skills Development
In a major move to combat unemployment, the government has onboarded 1,200 youths into the second phase of the Fashion Future Skills Acquisition Programme, which focuses on garment production and leatherworks. The programme, managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in partnership with Ethnocentric Ltd, is backed by a substantial $3 million sponsorship from the MasterCard Foundation.
“This level of investment speaks volumes about the rising confidence in Abia’s governance and economic future under Governor Alex Otti,” said Kanu.
Creative Industry Boost
Recognizing the potential of the creative economy, the state has launched the Abia Creative Talent Hunt Initiative, in collaboration with the Ministries of Youth and Sports Development and Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy. This initiative aims to identify, train, and support emerging talents in music and other artistic fields.
“We’re building a future where Abia’s creative voices can compete nationally and internationally, backed by structured mentorship and exposure,” the commissioner noted.
Inclusive Sports Development
Demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity, the state has also acquired a wheelchair-accessible bus for use by physically challenged athletes. This vehicle will be deployed during the upcoming International Sports Championship, slated for September 3 to October 12, 2025.
“This gesture ensures that no athlete is left behind Abia is setting a standard for inclusivity in sports,” Kanu said.
Youth Day Celebration and Recognition of Sporting Excellence
In celebration of International Youth Day from August 6 to 12, the state has lined up a week-long programme that includes a Youth Assembly, symposiums, and interstate exchange initiatives. These activities aim to amplify youth voices and foster civic engagement.
Furthermore, Governor Otti is expected to host Abia-born FALCONETS players who recently returned from international duties in Europe, honoring their accomplishments and showcasing their achievements as a source of pride for the state.
Leadership Presence
The press briefing was attended by several top government officials, including the Commissioners for Youth and Sports Development, Arts, Culture and Creative Economy; the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Sir Chris Onwuegbu; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Citizen Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
