The Abia State Government has finalized plans to collaborate with COSCHARIS Group to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) for intra-city and state transport services.

This initiative aims to enhance the transport system and establish an organized logistics framework in major cities such as Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, thereby creating a modern and sustainable transportation network.

During a recent business meeting with Dr. Cosmas Maduka, Founder and CEO of COSCHARIS Group, Governor Alex Otti articulated the rationale behind the decision to adopt electric vehicles. He stated, “Our decision to go electric was a well-thought-out decision; we didn’t just jump into it, we looked at everything.” Governor Otti emphasized the global trend towards phasing out fossil fuel vehicles, noting that many European nations plan to do so by 2030 or 2035, while Nigeria’s previous target was set for 2070.

The Governor underscored the inevitability of transitioning to electric vehicles, asserting that it will happen eventually. He highlighted the advantages of EVs, including their reliance on renewable energy, lower maintenance costs, and fewer components compared to traditional vehicles. As he explained, “You buy a vehicle that has 200 parts as against one that has 17 if TESLA is right, but the maximum is 20. So it can’t be the same.”

Addressing concerns about charging infrastructure in a state with inconsistent power supply, Governor Otti assured that measures are being implemented to enhance electricity access. He pointed out the role of Geometric Power in Aba, which currently manages power supply across nine local government areas (LGAs), and ongoing efforts to extend coverage through partnerships with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). He remarked, “Aba as an island is out of the National Grid technically.”

Governor Otti praised COSCHARIS Group’s comprehensive approach to the EV project and encouraged them to expedite plans with the state government. Dr. Cosmas Maduka expressed gratitude for being chosen as a partner, emphasizing COSCHARIS’s extensive experience in the automobile sector. He remarked, “Electric Vehicles is where the world is headed,” affirming their commitment to ensuring the project’s success.

Mr. Josiah Samuel, Group Managing Director of COSCHARIS, described the initiative as timely given the global growth in EV adoption. The meeting included key officials from both COSCHARIS and the Abia State Government, indicating strong collaborative efforts toward this innovative transportation solution.
