The Abia State Government has affirmed that the Igbo Language will remain a compulsory subject in both basic and post-basic schools.

This announcement was made during a program organized by the Igbo Women Assembly in Umuahia to celebrate International Mother Language Day.

Governor Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Matt Ekwuribe, emphasized that this initiative is aimed at encouraging younger generations to embrace and take pride in their heritage.

He called on parents, stakeholders, and educational institutions to support this effort, which aligns with the global celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity.

International Mother Language Day, observed annually on February 21, promotes awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity worldwide.
