In a significant move towards upholding human rights, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced the inauguration of a public complaints office aimed at addressing grievances from individuals.

The establishment of this office is part of Governor Otti’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability within the state.

The newly introduced Complaints Office serves as a platform for residents of Abia State to report instances of human rights abuses and misconduct by public officials. Governor Otti emphasized the importance of providing citizens with a channel to voice their concerns and hold those in positions of power accountable for their actions.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Government House in Umuahia to introduce the office, Justice Kyrian Chukwuemeka Nwankpa (Rtd.), the Ombudsman to the State Governor, highlighted the innovative nature of the initiative. He expressed his dedication to fulfilling the governor’s vision for the office and assured the public that their complaints would be taken seriously.

Justice Nwankpa explained that the role of the Complaints Office is to receive and investigate grievances from individuals against public servants, government agencies, corporations, and businesses. Following thorough investigations, the office will provide recommendations to the governor, aiming to address issues and ensure justice for the people of Abia State.

The establishment of the Ombudsman’s office marks a significant development, as such a position did not previously exist within the state. Justice Nwankpa emphasized that the office would act as a public advocate, representing the interests of citizens and striving to resolve disputes effectively.

Currently, the Ombudsman’s office is already addressing grievances submitted to it, and plans are underway to further expand its operations. Justice Nwankpa urged individuals and groups who have experienced human rights violations to reach out to the office, emphasizing their commitment to delivering justice and upholding the rule of law.
