The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strategic partnerships over foreign aid, emphasizing collaboration that creates mutual value.
Governor Otti made this known while receiving the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Richard Mills, at the Government House in Umuahia.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ctz. Njoku Ukoha, Ambassador Mills commended Governor Otti’s leadership style, describing it as a model for good governance and transformative development in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
“Your leadership in Abia has brought real, positive change,” Ambassador Mills said. “Your focus on infrastructure and security has transformed the state. We see Abia as a powerful example of how to improve governance across the Southeast. The U.S. deeply values its partnership with Abia and the region.”
The Ambassador noted that his visit aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration and deepen U.S.-Abia relations in areas such as economic growth, youth empowerment, and governance reforms.
“There are tremendous opportunities here for our business and commercial interests. Your administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and economic empowerment aligns closely with U.S. business values,” he added.
In his response, Governor Otti expressed appreciation for the Ambassador’s visit, describing it as a significant endorsement of his administration’s progress.
“We don’t believe in grants and handouts; we believe in partnerships that add value to both sides,” Otti stated. “Abia has much to offer, particularly as the SME capital of Nigeria. We’re ready to work with the U.S. to create meaningful impact.”
The Governor also highlighted ongoing reforms in healthcare, education, waste management, SMEs, and digital technology, reaffirming his government’s dedication to inclusive and sustainable development.
The closed-door meeting was attended by key members of the State Executive Council, including the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu; Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D; and several commissioners overseeing critical sectors such as power, health, science and technology, agriculture, and environment.
