The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a three-day period of mourning in honor of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently.
The party made this known in an official statement released by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday, July 15, 2025.
According to the statement, all ADC chapters and political structures across the country will suspend political activities and public engagements for the duration of the mourning period, beginning Tuesday, July 15. The move, the party said, is to solemnly honor the life and service of Buhari, who held several significant roles in Nigeria’s history—as a citizen, soldier, former Military Head of State, and two-term democratically elected President.
“Regardless of political affiliations, what cannot be denied is that President Buhari served this country with a fierce sense of duty, personal discipline, and conviction,” the statement read. “With his force of personal example, Buhari inspired millions across social divides, particularly among the poor, who revered him and stood by him throughout his political career.”
However, the ADC did not stop at eulogizing the late president. The party sharply criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Buhari’s own political platform, accusing it of hypocrisy and opportunism in the wake of his death.
“It is deeply regrettable that the same party and government that spent the last two years actively dismantling Buhari’s legacy, discrediting his record, and blaming him for their own failings, now position themselves as chief mourners,” the ADC said. “This is sheer hypocrisy and a brazen attempt to harvest political capital from a national tragedy.”
The ADC warned Buhari’s family and loyalists to remain vigilant against what it described as political exploitation masked as tribute. “We urge them to be wary of those who seek to use his memory for selfish political advantage,” the statement added.
In closing, the ADC called on Nigerians to honor the late president by remembering the values he represented at his best—integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to public service. “Let his legacy serve as a mirror to reflect the standards of ethics and leadership we must demand from those who govern us, now and in the future,” Abdullahi concluded.
