The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian football legend Peter Rufai, famously known as Dodo Mayana, describing him as one of the finest goalkeepers to ever represent Nigeria on the international stage.
In a heartfelt press statement released on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC paid tribute to Rufai’s exceptional career and enduring legacy.
“As a giant of African football, Peter Rufai exemplified the brilliance, courage, and determination of the Nigerian spirit,” Abdullahi said. “On the field, he was not just a player—he was a symbol of pride for an entire nation.”
Rufai, who was widely admired for his athleticism, leadership, and composure between the posts, played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s golden era of football. He was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ historic triumph at the 1994 African Cup of Nations and also represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.
“With every save, every kick of the ball, and every opportunity he had to play, Rufai represented Nigeria and the Super Eagles with unmatched passion, skill, and grace,” the ADC noted.
The party further emphasized that Rufai’s influence extended beyond the pitch. “Today, as we celebrate his remarkable life, we also mourn the passing of a man and a legend, whose love for the beautiful game and deep devotion to his country inspired generations. He leaves behind an indelible mark on the history of Nigerian football.”
Peter Rufai’s legacy continues to resonate among fans, aspiring athletes, and citizens alike, as a shining example of excellence, patriotism, and humility.
