The African Democratic Congress (ADC) kicked off its nationwide presidential primaries today Monday May 25 2026 as party members across Nigeria queue up behind their preferred aspirants in a direct open voting process at all wards.

According to the party timetable primary elections started on May 21 2026 with State Houses of Assembly House of Representatives and Senate seats contested simultaneously at the ward level.

Governorship primaries held on May 22 2026 while the Presidential Primary is set for today May 25 2026. This will be followed by a National Executive Committee meeting on May 26 2026 and a Special National Convention on May 27 2026 for final ratifications.

The process uses the Option A4 system where voters line up openly behind their choice to ensure transparency and fairness.

Main contenders

  • Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar voted in his Ajiya Ward Jimeta Yola Adamawa State.
  • Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi took part.
  • Economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen is the third cleared aspirant.

ADC leaders called for unity and discipline and described the exercise as a major step to build a strong credible alternative for Nigerians ahead of 2027. Results are expected soon after counting with the final flagbearer to be ratified at the convention.

It added that this will be followed by a meeting of the National Executive Committee on May 26, 2026, and a Special National Convention on May 27, 2026, where final ratifications will be made.
