Renowned legal figure Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) advises President Bola Tinubu to streamline ministerial appointments, reducing the current count of 48 to a leaner 10-12.
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, Agbakoba emphasizes the need for merging ministries and eliminating redundancy.
He firmly believes that a cabinet of 48 ministers is excessive and unnecessary. He encouraged President Tinubu to consider consolidating some ministries and eliminating others.
Agbakoba commended Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy and expressed his full support for economic reform. However, he criticized the government’s slow response to the current economic hardship.
Agbakoba questioned the need for such a large cabinet and suggested a maximum of 12 ministers. He proposed merging several ministries and abolishing others, including the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Housing. He argued that the government does not need a housing ministry as it does not own a house.
Agbakoba called for a thorough overhaul of the cabinet, reducing the number of ministers from 48 to around 10 or 12. He also suggested removing the constitutional requirement for every state to produce a minister.
