The executive Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has acknowledged that he likes the presidential ambition of former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain declared on Friday that he is ready to host the Labour Party presidential flagbearer whenever he visits Ebonyi.

Naija News reports that Umahi stated this while appearing live on Arise TV programme today.

During the interview, Umahi denied viral reports of him saying that Obi would not get a single vote from Ebonyi in the 2023 elections.

He said Obi is his friend and he likes what the Anambra man is doing politically.

Umahi said: “I never in all my outings and utterances mentioned Peter Obi.

“Peter Obi is my friend, I’m going to host him in Ebonyi State and I will host him publicly. I like what he’s doing, and it’s very encouraging.”

Governor Umahi accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his state of orchestrating the narrative about his stance on Obi.

He also noted during the interview that the Igbos lost out massively in the APC and the PDP during the presidential primaries.

Gov. Umahi Of Ebonyi Clarifies Statement On Peter Obi

Naija News reports that Umahi had in a statement earlier clarified his statement about Labour Party presidential candidate.

The Governor was quoted to have said earlier while addressing political leaders, traditional rulers, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, among other stakeholders of the state during the swearing-in of five commissioners and other appointees at the new government house in Abakaliki that Obi will not get a vote in Ebonyi.

Clarifying his statement, Umahi, through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Francis Nwaze declared that he was reiterating his earlier promise to support the APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The statement reads; “Our attention has been drawn to insinuations in some quarters suggesting that the Ebonyi state governor, Engr. David Umahi, FNSE, FNATE has specifically asked Ebonyi people not to vote for a particular candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

“What governor Umahi did during a stakeholder’s meeting on Monday was in the spirit of sportsmanship to emphasize his earlier resolve to support the eventual winner of the Presidential primary elections who later turned out to be Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

The statement by Governor Umahi by all standards only underscored his determination to live up to his earlier comment of supporting the Party’s Standard Bearer.”
