The Nigerian Army has intensified its operations against militants in the South-East, announcing that troops under Operation Udoka neutralised four suspected terrorists in Abia State during a clearance mission conducted on Sunday.
Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, spokesperson for the South-East Joint Task Force, disclosed in a statement that the operation took place in a forested area in Umuaku Isuochi, Umunneochi Local Government Area, based on actionable intelligence.
In a related development, troops launched a pre-dawn raid on Monday at a camp purportedly operated by the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, near the Imo River. The military destroyed the facility and recovered weapons, vehicles, and other materials.
According to Lt. Col. Unuakhalu, similar operations were carried out at ESN camps in Imo State, leading to additional recoveries.
The crackdown extended to a border community between Abia and Imo states, where a fierce gun battle erupted in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North LGA. Residents fled into nearby bushes as soldiers exchanged heavy gunfire with unidentified armed men allegedly camped in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported the arrival of over 15 Hilux vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) belonging to the Nigerian Army in Umuchima as early as 6:00 am. Roads leading to the village were cordoned off, and sustained gunfire was heard for hours as soldiers moved to dislodge the gunmen.
The border community, located along the riverine boundary between Abia State and the Mbaise area of Imo State, has reportedly served as a hideout for criminal elements. The Nigerian Army remains committed to eradicating such threats and ensuring peace in the region.
