Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has blamed President Bola Tinubu for the resurgence of bombing incidents in the North East.
In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, Atiku criticized the president’s poor handling of the country’s security, warning that Nigeria could slip back into widespread terrorism if no action is taken. This warning follows twin bombings on Saturday at a motor park in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, which resulted in the deaths of over six people.
The first attack involved a female suicide bomber who detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a motor park, according to Borno Police Spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso. “On the 29th of June, at about 3:40 pm, a suicide bomber who is a woman went to a busy motor park near a T junction in Gwoza. The place is Mararaba. She detonated an explosive, killing herself, the baby she had with her, and six others, leaving 15 people wounded. Further updates will be discussed please,” said Daso during a phone conversation with THE WHISTLER.
The second attack, occurring immediately after, was perpetrated by a suspected bomber disguised as a mourner, who detonated another explosive device in a different location within the same local government, killing one person and injuring 18.
Atiku expressed his sorrow over the renewed incidents of terrorism, stating, “It’s a sad development that the ugly incidents of terrorism are resurfacing and, indeed, metastasising in the North-East.”
He condemned the attacks and criticized the government’s ineffective response. “It is unfortunate that much of the pushback against the Boko Haram terror sect is being undone due to the government’s lacklustre approach to maintaining the frontline,” Atiku said. He urged the federal authorities to take their responsibilities seriously to prevent the North-East from becoming a theater of terrorism and extreme violence once again.
“My condolences go to the families of victims of these attacks, and it is my prayer that God grants a peaceful repose to the souls of the departed,” he added.
