Former presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned a viral video clip featuring a Canadian-Nigerian woman, Amaka Patience Sunnberger, who threatened to poison members of the Yoruba and Edo communities in Canada.
In a post on his X handle, Atiku stated, “The contentious virtual chat room clip, wherein participants made threats of ethnic cleansing against the Yorubas and Benin people, is unequivocally condemned in all aspects.” He emphasized that the identities of those involved have been disclosed, and calls have been made to Canadian law enforcement agencies to prosecute the offenders.
Atiku commended the House of Representatives and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) for their swift and decisive action in addressing this incendiary rhetoric and preventing further escalation. He praised their efforts, saying, “In this regard, I commend the House of Representatives and the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission for their prompt and decisive action in addressing this incendiary rhetoric and preempting further escalation.”
The former Vice President of Nigeria underscored the importance of national unity and the protection of Nigeria’s diverse communities. “This disconcerting episode underscores, once again, the imperative of uniting our people and our nation. Our rich diversity is our most cherished national asset and must be vigilantly protected,” he added.
The threats were made by Amaka Patience Sunnberger, identified by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of NiDCOM, in a viral TikTok video. Despite the context of a preceding audio where a group of Yoruba and Edo individuals allegedly threatened to unalive Igbo children, Atiku Abubakar has unequivocally condemned Sunnberger’s hateful statement, emphasizing the need to protect all communities from such harmful rhetoric
