Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Atiku issued his statement on Friday, emphasizing the need for an impartial and transparent probe into the matter.

In an interview with Arise Television, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio blocked her motions in the Senate after she rejected his sexual advances. According to her, the incident occurred when she visited Akpabio’s residence alongside her husband.

“My case is like that of a student being punished by a lecturer for refusing to sleep with him,” she stated.

However, Akpabio, through his media consultant Kenny Okulogbo, denied the allegations. He claimed that the senator was aggrieved because she was removed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content.

Weighing in on the controversy, Atiku underscored the importance of a proper investigation to establish the truth.

“The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it—especially its leadership—must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect, both for their office and for the Nigerian citizens they serve,” Atiku stated.

He stressed that sexual harassment is a serious issue that hampers women’s progress and should never be dismissed, particularly when involving high-ranking officials.

“As the third most powerful figure in the country, the Senate President should embody unimpeachable character,” Atiku asserted. “The handling of this matter will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance.”

Atiku further urged the Senate to address the issue comprehensively, noting that with only four female senators currently serving, it is essential to foster a safe and respectful environment for women in politics.
