Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has refuted claims that he intends to step down for another presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier reports suggested that Atiku would withdraw from the race if a younger candidate won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.

During a recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service, the Wazirin Adamawa emphasized his commitment to strengthening the ADC’s national and grassroots presence, rather than planning to step aside.

Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, released a statement on Thursday addressing the misinformation. After carefully reviewing both the video and transcripts of the interview in Hausa and English, Ibe confirmed that Atiku never said or implied he would step down for anyone.

The statement highlighted that Atiku clearly stated young candidates and other aspirants are welcome to contest. Moreover, if a young candidate emerged from a competitive primary, Atiku would support them without hesitation.

Ibe criticized attempts to misrepresent the former vice president’s words, calling such distortions mischievous and unacceptable. He stressed that Atiku has made no decision to withdraw before the election contest begins.
