A powerful political coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is gaining momentum, with the goal of challenging President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027.
Prominent political figures including Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate; former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; ex-Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi; and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, are reportedly involved in the alliance-building process.
The group, operating under the banner of the National Political Consultative Group, convened a strategy meeting in Abuja on Saturday. Attendees included political heavyweights and associates from across Nigeria, signaling a nationwide scope for the emerging alliance.
While a concrete presidential ticket is yet to be finalized, insiders suggest that discussions are ongoing to determine the coalition’s structure and strategy. Notably, the group has dropped its earlier plan to run under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and is now considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a potential platform.
Speculation is also mounting that Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris may be aligning with the opposition bloc. Idris, currently serving a second term under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is said to be exploring options with the Atiku-led coalition a move that could indicate internal rifts within the APC in Kebbi State.
As of the time of this report, THE WHISTLER could not independently verify Governor Idris’s alleged involvement in the coalition talks.
