The American University of Nigeria (AUN) celebrated its 16th Annual Founder’s Day and 20th Anniversary in grand style on Saturday, showcasing two decades of visionary leadership and academic excellence.
The event, held at the Lamido Aliyu Musdafa Commencement Hall in Yola, drew an esteemed gathering of political leaders, diplomats, academics, and traditional rulers.
Highlighting the occasion was the keynote address delivered by former Governor Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and long-time ally of AUN Founder Atiku Abubakar. Obi’s stirring speech focused on the importance of leadership, education, and the role of youth in shaping Nigeria’s future.
The American Embassy in Nigeria, represented by Deputy Ambassador David Greene, extended its congratulations to AUN for its enduring commitment to the Yola community and surrounding regions. Greene lauded the university’s founder for establishing an institution that not only promotes education but also drives impactful humanitarian initiatives.
AUN President Dewayne Frazier reflected on the university’s 20-year journey, attributing its success to Atiku’s visionary leadership and unwavering dedication. “Today, we celebrate two decades of steadfast vision and collective achievement,” Frazier remarked, commending the contributions of AUN’s students, staff, and alumni.
The event also featured a recognition ceremony by the AUN Honour Society, which celebrated students for their academic excellence and contributions to community development. Vice President for Academics Dan Okereke emphasized the Honour Society’s commitment to fostering innovation, citing their annual STEM competition for secondary schools in Adamawa State as a key initiative.
In his keynote speech, Obi paid tribute to Atiku’s sacrifices and dedication to education, describing it as “more than a venture; it is a calling.” Addressing the students, Obi encouraged them to embrace leadership and hope, urging them to rise above tribal and religious divides. Drawing on Chinua Achebe’s insights, he stressed that Nigeria’s challenges stem from a lack of true leadership and highlighted the need for leaders with competence, compassion, and vision.
Obi underscored the importance of education and healthcare as pillars of societal progress, calling on the youth to champion meritocracy and integrity. “The future of Nigeria lies in your hands,” he declared, inspiring the audience to commit to excellence and resilience in the face of challenges.
The ceremony concluded with a momentous presentation of a commemorative book by President Frazier to Atiku, Senator Ben Obi, and Governor Obi, honoring their pivotal roles in AUN’s journey. Atiku expressed his deep gratitude, reflecting on the university’s transformative impact over two decades. “This milestone is not just a celebration but the beginning of a movement that has touched countless lives,” he said, acknowledging key contributors to AUN’s legacy, including founding Board Chairman Professor Robert Pastor and other pioneering members.
Looking ahead, Atiku voiced optimism for AUN’s future: “As we mark 20 years, we are only at the beginning of an even greater journey.”
