Atiku, Obi renew merger talks ahead of 2027 elections

Must Read

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has recently engaged in renewed discussions with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stirring speculation about a possible merger between their political parties.

Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been advocating for a united political front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi, who was Atiku’s running mate in 2019 before defecting to the LP for the 2023 election, has now responded to Atiku’s call for unity.

The meeting between Atiku and Obi comes shortly after Obi’s visit to former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, who has also been pushing for a repeat of the 2019 PDP ticket with Atiku and Obi.

While the details of the discussions are not yet public, a source within the LP suggests that Obi is open to any idea that could move Nigeria forward. The source also notes that Obi sees Atiku as his leader, a sentiment he has expressed on several occasions.

The potential merger between the PDP and LP has been a topic of discussion among political analysts and PDP members, who believe that Obi’s defection to the LP in 2023 contributed to the PDP’s defeat in the election.

As the 2027 elections approach, the outcome of the merger talks between Atiku and Obi will be closely watched by political observers and Nigerians alike, as they seek to chart a new course for the country’s political landscape.
