Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a political organization he helped found more than two decades ago.
This marks the end of his longstanding membership in the party.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and what he described as the party’s departure from its original principles as reasons for his decision.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated in the letter. He acknowledged that the decision was difficult but deemed it necessary under the current circumstances.
The letter reflected his deep personal connection to the PDP, emphasizing his status as a founding father of the party:
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision. However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku Abubakar served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and was the PDP’s presidential candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections. Reflecting on this, he noted:
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”
Although the letter did not reveal his future political direction, his resignation has sparked widespread speculation about his potential plans ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
He concluded the letter with well-wishes for the party’s future:
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”
The resignation letter was officially acknowledged by Hammadama Abubakar, Chairman of the Jada 1 Ward, on the same day it was written.
