In a surprising turn of events, Michael Achimugu, once a vocal critic of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has secured a significant position as the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The appointment comes shortly after President Tinubu’s decision to overhaul the leadership of aviation-related agencies as part of a broader initiative to enhance the nation’s aviation sector.
Achimugu, who previously served as a media aide to Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential campaign, gained attention for publicly accusing the former Vice President of corruption and financial impropriety. In an interview with Television Continental (TVC), Achimugu claimed that his motivation for exposing alleged wrongdoing was rooted in a desire to educate the Nigerian public and discourage them from supporting Atiku’s presidential bid.
Among the startling allegations made by Achimugu was the accusation that Atiku had plans to eliminate certain high-ranking government officials if he emerged victorious in the 2023 presidential election. These claims, at the time, stirred controversy and added fuel to the political climate surrounding the election.
In a twist of fate, Tinubu has now appointed Achimugu to a key role within the NCAA, signaling a strategic move in the ongoing efforts to revitalize the aviation sector. The decision to entrust Achimugu with the position of Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection underscores the administration’s commitment to bringing in individuals with diverse experiences and perspectives.
The announcement of Achimugu’s appointment was made by NCAA spokesperson Carol Adekotujo in a statement released on Saturday. According to the statement, Achimugu officially assumed office at the NCAA headquarters in Abuja on Friday. Prior to this role, Achimugu had served as the Special Assistant on Customer Relations and Special Assistant on Media to Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and former spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council.
As Achimugu takes on this new responsibility, it remains to be seen how his transition from a vocal critic to a key player within the aviation regulatory body will influence the dynamics of the industry and the broader political landscape.
